Q. Will I get sick in Mexico?
Everyone's different. You know your own system, and how it may react to different foods and beverages. It's wise to take along products such as Mylanta, Tums or Pepto Bismal, just in case you need them!
Another good idea is to consult with your physician prior to traveling out of the country ~ a low dose antibiotic may be recommended for you to take the entire duration of your trip, to combat diarrhea.
Cancun, Mayan Riviera, Cozumel and Cabo San Lucas offer purified drinking water as a result of their modern desalinization plants. However, you never know if your salad has been washed in water that's not purified, or if the ice cubes in your drink are made from purified water.
It's highly recommended that you drink only bottled water in all other resort areas of Mexico, such as Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and Ixtapa. These cities don't offer the same purified water systems, so the likelihood of getting sick is much greater.
Other precautions would include:
1. Never eat food from a roadside vendor
2. Drink soda directly from the can (so there are no ice cubes)
3. Carefully choose the restaurants you eat in
It's best to be aware, and to be prepared!
